Introducing You to K-pop

By Jasmine Cortes

What is K-pop?

K-pop short for Korean pop is a genre that is inspired by different types of genres around the world such as pop, hip hop, rock, etc. This genre has over 370  k-pop groups, but not only does this genre have groups but also soloists. These singers are called idols.

How it all started

K-pop first started in the year 1992 after the first group to ever debut were Seo Taiji and Boys. They released Nan Arayo (i know) their first song in 1992. This later started to gain popularity in Korea and it led to other groups’ debut. K-pop started to get popular in America when PSY released his song “Gangnam Style” back in 2013. This song started to get over 1 billion streams which helped gain a lot of American listeners. America was later introduced to a boy band called BTS. BTS started blowing up in 2015, 2 years after their debut. They became a successful worldwide group thanks to their fans all around the world and sold over 20 million albums worldwide.

The K-pop community

The K-pop community is overall known as toxic but it really is just the ones who like to gatekeep and criticize idols. Fandoms always try to protect their idols and defend them, but most of the time some people in these fandoms go crazy while defending them. Crazy fans would most likely be the ones who judge other idols and have fan wars about who is the better idol or group, so we (the positive fan communities) don’t claim them. This community can also be very overwhelming for idols because they have to face criticism from crazy fans. This is mostly the negative side of this community but now let's talk about the positive side of this community. This community has a lot of strong fandoms whether the fandoms are small or big. They also help take over any offensive trends with k-pop videos, so no offensive post could get views. For example, whiteout Wednesday. Whiteout Wednesday was a mock of blackout Tuesday and it was like a white supremacy digital protest (went against BLM), the kpop community helped take over that hashtag because it was a mock.

If you like fast rap, I would recommend listening to August D, Stray Kids, and some BTS songs like Cypher pt 4. If you're leaning more on the pop side, then I would definitely recommend listening to Blackpink, TWICE, BTS, and etc. In the end, K-pop is a very beautiful genre, so don’t be afraid to explore more of the music that's made!
