The Vampire Diaries: Why Did Nina Dobrev Leave the Show?
By Sanija Omeragic
Imagine being a teen in a creepy town with weird stuff. Being surrounded by different creatures: vampires, wolves, witches, hybrids, all of that. You go to your high school and find this very mysterious, good-looking boy in your classes. You start talking to him a lot, knowing you both have quite a lot in common, but then you start to get very suspicious. He starts turning away each time you get hurt. Imagine you hang out with a boy you think is very cool and good looking, and you go to his house. What if you saw black/grey veins coming from his eyes, wouldn't you be scared and get out of there? I think everyone would. That's the basis of The Vampire Diaries.
The Vampire Diaries is a very fun show that deals with relationships, drama, and mystery. As the actors have said about the show, it was enjoyable to make and they had a great time working together to make it. But after season 6 things got quite awkward in the show. This article will show you exactly what has been going on. Hope you enjoy it.
Elena Gilbert, a high school student, was shocked after her parents got into a car crash. Then Stefan and Damon roll into Mystic Falls and throughout the show Elena finds herself in a love triangle with both guys, who protect her from all the supernatural danger stuff that threatens her town.
Actors Nina Dobrev, Paul Welsey, and Ian Somerholder are very good friends in the show, though at first Nina and Paul were not so close. Nina also stated on the "Directionally Challenged" podcast run by her very good friends and co-stars Candice King and Kayla Ewell,
"Paul and I didn't get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn't like Paul Wesley."
Luckily, they started getting along very well on the show and are now very good friends till this day. After a couple of seasons, Nina and Ian started to have a connection to each other. Not just in the scenes in the show, but also in real life. Ian and Nina started to hang out more and more. Nina didn't intentionally think anything was going to happen between her and Ian.
Throughout the show, Elena eventually turned into one of the supernaturals by Damon Salvatore, aka Ian. Because of this, and all their scenes together they started to date in real life. Nina and Ian were dating for a couple of years and loved each other.
When Paul Wesley heard that Nina and Ian were dating he was very happy for them, but a little upset because he also liked Nina. But since Nina, Ian, and Paul were all very good friends he didn't want to ruin anything between them.
Then most Vampire Diaries fans started to notice Nina and Ian start to fall out of love from each other. Both stars announced that they split up for the best in 2013 for the show and other personal reasons. It got very awkward between them, but they remained friends still. While they broke up, their characters in the show were still dating. While the show was going on, Nina and Ian even accepted a "Best Chemistry" award together at the People's Choice Awards shortly after breaking up.
Nina ended up introducing her very good friend Nikki Reed--who starred in the Twilight movies--to Ian and thought everything would be fine and they would all be good friends. After a year, Nina got very suspicious the way Ian and Nikki were hanging out. (Don't forget this was all happening during season 6 in The Vampire Diaries!)
Nina realized that Ian and Nikki were dating. Nina was okay and happy for their relationship, but a little confused. While Nina and Ian's characters were still dating on the show, Nikki was not happy with it and told Ian to stop. Nina didn't think anything of it; she just went with it for the show. Fans started to think she left because of her and Ian's breakup, but this was not the case, Nina announced in 2015 she decided it was best for her to leave the show after her character Elena's journey had to come to an end. After season 6, Nina came back only for the final episode in season 8.
When Nina came back to the show, she mentioned that she did not want to play a teenage girl anymore, she wanted to play the role of an adult. Nina also said in an interview,
“I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six-season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger.”
