How is Quarantine Affecting our 6th graders

By Aleia Fernandez and Ella Zak

As you may have noticed, we are stuck in a quarantine, stuck in the same house, in the same neighborhood, and worst of all, stuck with the same people. (Terrible! We feel you!)

We’ve all had at least one day when we didn’t want to go to school or didn’t want to go see someone, but now that we’re restricted, suddenly, the need is so strong. When in a crazy time like this, sometimes it helps to know how other people are dealing with it. So that’s why we gathered some information on how our 6th graders are handling this quarantine.

We were able to collect information using a google survey sent out to the whole 6th grade, and got about 30 responses. When comparing all of the reponses, we noticed that the most common answer to the question, what is your least favorite thing about being in quarantine, was having to stay inside. “Not being able to have freedom to go outside,” wrote Jack Flanigan from 601. It turned out that Millie Siller and Jack had the same train of thought. ”Being away from people and my neighborhood,” was her least favorite thing. Mark Szirtes from 601, on the other hand, simply said, “the boredom.” Honestly, I think we can all agree on that!

Most people said that they like school better than online school just like Fiona Florsheim from 604, “My least favorite thing about quarantine is doing my work online. It is very hard for me to focus when I am not at school.”

But some differ, saying they prefer being at home. In fact, Wilder Pantekoek from 603 said, “this quarantine has helped me in a good way because I get to hang out with my cousin almost everyday on Fortnite.”

Still, many of you are feeling sick of your family, like Chiara Oprianesi from 604. “I really miss my friends and having a little alone time. At home it's constantly "family time" and I'm kind of sick of it all.”

From the survey, we found that most of you were exasperated by your parents/guardians and specifically, your brothers, with the percentage climbing to about 30%-35%!

Now that you learned about some of your fellow 6th graders' thoughts and opinions, we hope you see that everyone, in some way, is in the same boat as you.

Although this is a hard and crazy time, just remember that we will get through this and some day you might be telling your children and grandchildren the stories of these chaotic times. I mean, how cool is that?

We have each other and that’s all we need to get through this. We can do this! (after eating tons of snacks and going through roll after roll of toilet paper of course).
