TikTok

POV (point of view): You are my computer and I’m on the school blog.

So, What Is It?

Tiktok is an app where you can post 13-60 second videos. The videos can have music playing over them or you can make an original sound. People share their opinions and start trends. You make an account and you can follow creators that you find and watch their content.

Where Did It Come From?

TikTok originated in China where they called it Douyin meaning “vibrating sound.” The app originally started out as Musical.ly in April of 2014, but later changed to TikTok in August 2018. Many people were sad about Musical.ly’s change to TikTok, but now they (and by they we mean we) look back at it and often think their videos are embarrassing.

Other Platforms

How is TikTok different from other social media platforms like Vine and Musical.ly? Many people claim TikTok is ‘The new Vine.’ Vine was an app where you could record short six second videos played in a continuous loop that you could then share. Many people used Vine as an app to create short funny videos or memes. Musical.ly was originally just a lip syncing app, but after its change to TikTok, many humorous people decided to join the community and share a laugh with others on the app. Some of their humor is what we call ‘dark humor’ (offensive humor, joking about a sensitive topic which is often seen as offensive to others but some still find it funny.) Dark humor may cause some controversy amongst people who do find the jokes offensive.

TikTok has many aspects that make TikTok the way it is. There is a lot of controversy around how people view TikTok and their opinions on the app. So, why do people enjoy TikTok? Well, TikTok has a variety of trends people do. Unlike Vine, TikTok rarely has any original ideas. When someone does something, other people like to follow, therefore creating a trend. This happens a lot with TikTok dances. This isn’t always a bad thing, though. It allows people to learn how to work together and build off each other to create new ideas.

TikTok also affects kids in many ways by changing, for example, their daily routine. Kids might in the morning when they wake up they might check their Tik Tok to see how many followers, likes, and views they got the day before. They might also check their TikTok when they come out of school. TikTok also affects kids that if something going on trending other kids might want to try it out to see if it’s true or to just join in the fun. This can also be dangerous to kids too because lots of kids believe everything that they see. Kids might also talk with their friends about their TikTok and spend hours on the app doing their own TikTok or making TikToks with their friends.

TikTok changes the way kids communicate with each other. For example you may have seen kids speaking to each other in a british accent or funny voices that they hear on the app. They even speak through the dances. They send TikTok when they want to say something to each other or when they want to express their feelings to the world or to their friends. TikTok changed the way kids and teens express their feelings to each other in many ways.

Scandals

TikTok can be weird. From crazy POVs to over dramatic dancing. POVs can get pretty creative. One example is POV: “I kidnapped you and I am convinced that you are in love with me.’’ Pretty weird right? Some people do these types of POVs seriously and others do it as a joke. Loads of people comment on popular creators’ content and sometimes they take this to heart and might get offended. For example, recently Max Dressler and Tyler Brash have been having beef with each other. Tyler makes POVs and takes them seriously. There is a feature on tik tok that allows you to react to videos. Max reacts to Tyler’s content and makes them seem like a joke. Tyler takes it very seriously and made a comment about Max saying he’s going to beat him up for cyber bullying. Meanwhile Max is simply sharing the content that he is proud of and enjoys making. His fans enjoy watching them, too. This shows how TikTok can be Tik-Toxic

TikTok is not always for laughs and giggles. There is one account that many tik tokers worry about @Sittingandsmiling. The owner of the account does exactly what her username claims she does, she sits and smiles at nothing. Many people were fine with this at first, but then many started to worry. They began to realize that she wasn’t smiling anymore. People started commenting on things such as “wear a blue beanie if you’re in trouble” or “comment 20 in your next video if you need help.” In recent videos the number 17 appears above her head, although most are unsure of the meaning. She also recently stopped smiling in a few videos. She reasures she’s fine, though she continues to give many signs that she’s not okay. She may just be using it for clout, or views in the end though.

Over all, as negative as TikTok can be, it brings nations and differences together which can be a different and fun learning experience.
