Climate Change Activists Lead All Over the World
By Fiona Florsheim
So many people are now involved with climate change all over the world! Do you think climate activists are important? HPCMS 6th Grader, Kaitlyn Zdjelar, does. She believes they, “can take care of the world,” but not all voices and actions are heard, so I am writing to give them a chance.
Mari Copeny
Mari lives in Michigan and cares about her environment, specifically, water. According to Elle, when Mari was eight, she “wrote to President Barack Obama asking if he would meet with her and other citizens of Flint, Michigan,” about the water crisis happening there. The Flint Water Crisis happened when the city of Flint decided to use Flint River water because of pipeline construction. The water was very harmful, causing rashes & other horrible medical conditions like brain damage in children. President Obama did come to Michigan and met with Mari. According to Mari Copeny, she “fundraised over $500,000 with the nonprofit organization Pack your Back,” to help others. Mari really cares about helping our earth and its people.
Helena Gualinga
Helena Gualinga lives in Ecuador, and according to Preen.ph, Helena “has been fighting big oil companies since she was a little kid.” She really cares about the Amazon Rainforest, which is near her home. So many fires and deforestation are hurting it. According to Plant Based News, Helena was another person who also “attended the Global Climate Strike in New York and held a sign that said ‘INDIGENOUS BLOOD, NOT A SINGLE DROP MORE’.” Clearly, Helena cares deeply about our rainforests.
Autumn Peltier
Autumn, an indiginous Canadian young woman, cares about our water, and many other things that make the world what it is today. According to Plant Based News, she “recently spoke at the Global Landscapes Forum to spread awareness of how scarce clean water is in some indigenous communities.” Autumn lets us know the situation in some places, where they don’t have clean water to bathe in, let alone drink. According to CNN, Autumn says “We believe our water is sacred because we are born of water.” Autumn cares about people who don’t have water, and hopes that people that don’t have it, can get water more easily.
Bruno Rodriguez
Bruno who lives in Argentina, cares a lot about preventing fossil fuels and other polluters from hurting the earth. According to Rappler, Bruno made a speech at the United Nations, “We don’t want fossil fuels anymore....We will not wait passively to become that future: the time is now for us to be leaders.” Bruno feels our generation should step in and help with all the problems others choose not to fix. Fossil fuels and other things that are bad for the environment, should not be used anymore.
Thank you for reading! It is so important to learn about this because these people are doing such great things and may not get the chance to be heard. So stay tuned with climate change and activists!
