HPCMS Students and the Climate Strike

Sunnyside, New York - On Friday the 20th of September, there was a climate strike in downtown New York City. It started in Foley Square and everyone marched until Battery Park. The marching started at 12:00 P.M and ended at about 3:30 P.M. There were hundreds of thousands of people doing this march.

This march was very important to spread awareness about how we are going to die if we don’t fix our planet. This march was amazing because it wasn’t just in New York where it happened. It happened all over the world like London, Australia, Washington D.C, and 150 countries. This was super big because it’s not something affects one certain group of people. It affects all of us on this planet and all living things. This global strike was organized by students and children like myself and hundreds of thousands of students and children and people attended this world-wide event.

From my personal experience it was amazing. I loved to see so many people there supporting our planet and trying to get help for our planet. There were so many different people. While I was there I was able to get another young activists’ interview. For example, Jian Carlos is a 15 years old student who lives in Howard Beach, Queens. He said “I’m here climate striking today ‘cause we got to save the planet and we can’t let the policies that our president is implementing to continue or else we’re all gonna die.”

There were also Girl Scouts and people wearing clothes made from plastic bags and soda can holders and more. It was so amazing and I am so glad that I was there to be a part of something so big and something that affects everyone and everything on this planet that isn’t even being worried about right now. All the signs had so many great messages and it was just incredible. HPCMS 8th Grader Maica Quinn Crandall from Jackson Heights said she was striking because, “it’s important to protest to make a change and to get to the politicians and world leaders to listen to us and make a change and to fight for our future.”

8th grader Gwendolyn Kotsaftis, also from Jackson Heights said, “I went to the climate strike to spread the word about climate change and I did it to try and act on climate change.”

Cassius Quinn Crandall who is also an 8th grader at HPCMS said he attended because, “it was important and I wanted to help the world and I just think it was important.”

These were only some of the students in our school who went to this march. It’s fascinating that the next generation is stepping up to try and help what will soon be the planet that we have to keep in check.
