Ninja, the Growing Gaming Streamer

By Alexi Stegner and Sambuddha Ranabhat

Who Is Tyler Blevins? Tyler (Ninja) Blevins, the multi-millionaire face of Fortnite is growing as a gamer, streamer, and Youtuber. He is a twenty-seven year old married to Jessica Blevins. As a streamer Ninja has streamed many games, usually battle royale games, and combat games. A former competitive gamer from Halo, Blevins streams 10 hours a day in his hometown Chicago. He is able to stream his Fortnite gameplay on twitch responding to questions and interacting with fans who watch him play. He also competes in tournaments. He makes most of his money from social media such as twitch where he has 12 million followers, Instagram where he has 12 million followers, and Twitter where he has a bit over 4 million followers.

Recently Ninja has been complaining that he needs more sleep. When the New York Times interviewed him he said he would like to get more sleep but when he isn’t streaming he is losing subscribers. He says just while he was doing the interview he probably lost a lot of subscribers. Wherever Ninja goes he is mobbed by teenagers and tweens who immediately recognize his brightly dyed hair. He also hosted a 12-hour Fortnite live stream on New Year's Eve in Times Square.

The spark that started his love for gaming was his dad. His dad, Chuck Blevins, loved video games when raising Tyler. Ninja started to buy all the new consoles and started his love for gaming. His streaming all started with Halo 1. At a young age he had a surgery on his face and couldn’t stream or go to school for a month and his views went down. When he was into the battle royale games, he was streaming H1Z1 and PUBG. Then finally Fortnite came out and his viewers started blowing up. Ninja got married in August 2017 to Jessica Goch aka Jessica Blevins who is the manager of the multi-millionaire. Ninja says he streams video games for ten hours a day because its fun.

How Ninja Makes Millions

Ninja gets money from different platforms like Youtube and Twitch. When viewers love a streamer they often use a Twitch subscription. According to Forbes, “Twitch subscriptions are $5 which is split between Twitch itself and the streamer, meaning they get $2.50 a month per subscriber. Translating that into Ninja’s numbers, that means from Twitch subscriptions alone, he’s making at least $350,000 a month streaming Fortnite.”

Keep in mind this is just the amount of money he makes via subscription. He also has a donation link. He gets a donation every 10 or 20 seconds. According to a youtuber Exility, “He makes $411,000 every month by donations.” So total that and he makes about $761,000 a month off of subscriptions.

But it doesn’t stop there. He has a youtube channel where he posts his gameplays. He gets about 3 Million views per video and he uploads them every day. That means that “Ninja makes $240,000 every month,” according to Social Blade. That gives us a total of $1,001,000 per month. That might not be it, though. He also has sponsors like Redbull and Luminosity Gaming. How much he earns from his sponsors is unknown.

A lot of people assume that what he does is easy, but it isn't. He was extremely good at Fortnite and it was not easy for him to get recognized, which is the hardest part. He kept on streaming every day until he finally started to get recognized. Streaming for about 10 hours a day is hard. Getting hate and responding to it is also hard. Being called out can be tough too.

If you ever wanna start streaming it’s going to be tough. You will have an average of 20,000-60,000 viewers and that’s if your viewers enjoy you. Most viewers get toxic. In other words, they spread hate. There are some things that Ninja does that makes the viewers hate him, like raging and falsely banning gamers, but people make mistakes. When getting hated on it is very hard for Ninja because he starts to lose subscribers which is very bad for him. He might make a little bit less than a million a month due to that. He stated in a recent stream, “People don’t care about the content I put out, they just care about the money I make.” This statement shows that Ninja is really frustrated with some of his viewers.

Still, Ninja is the Twitch king as if right now. Who knows when things are going to really go downhill for him. Ninja is a great streamer. Streaming and making millions is hard and quite risky to do considering how much time it takes to make it up there. Ninja has been streaming for 7 years and after all the hard work and success, he’s really made it.

Now, what do HPCMS students think about Ninja? John Paul Izzagurie from class 601 thinks that Ninja doesn’t deserve the position he is in right now. He stated, “there are so many other jobs that people work hard on like fire fighting. It is absurd how he just sits in his computer and makes millions.” Tenzin Namgyal from class 601 thinks “Ninja is a bad influence on kids.” I decided to ask people who think that he does deserve it but actually couldn’t find anyone. I myself am the only one who believes that he deserves it. So, what do you guys think, does he?
