Snake Breeds, Mutations, Supers and Genes

Super Pastel Ball Python.

You want to know what’s really cool? Snakes! Have you ever wondered about the differences between snakes? Well, you might have heard of Anacondas and Boa Constrictors but what about others? In this article, we will describe some mutations and genes.

One Gene Snakes
First let’s talk about one gene animals before we look at two gene snakes. A one gene animal is an animal that only inherits one gene from the parents. This means that it only has one possible pattern that it can create without mutations. One example is a pastel ball python. This is interesting because it looks great, but wait until we look at two gene snakes and supers!

Two Gene Snakes
Two gene snakes are snakes that inherited two different parental genes. There are some two gene animals that aren’t named after the parental genes, like some combinations give the offspring a certain gene name. Examples of a two gene snakes would be a Pastel Spider, Enchi Banana, and Yellowbelly Pastel, there are endless combinations. These are cool because you can get beautiful patterns that can not be found one gene snakes. We could talk about snakes for hours that is how much there is to see and observe but if you want to talk about snakes, then do it!

Supers
Now we will get into supers. A super is created when two animals with the same inherited gene breed and the offspring can get the same gene from both animals, making it a super. This basically means that means any two snakes of the same breed can breed and create a super of that snake breed. One example of a super is a Super Enchi, which is an offspring of two Enchis which can make double of the patterns the gene can create. They are cool because they can have overlapping patterns or double patterns.

Black Mamba which isn’t a super.

Mutations
Mutations happen when the DNA of any animal is created wrong and keeps creating new DNA with the mistake. Sometimes, the changes aren’t noticeable but some can cause a huge impact on the organism. There are snakes that have had a mutation and are born a different color or pattern change, like the Colombian Rainbow Boa, which can sometimes be totally white. But some snakes have no eyes or even two heads. Most snakes or any animal with a huge mutation usually die quickly, but some animals with mutations live long and happy lives. Most snakes live 2 to 3 years but some big snakes can live 20 years.

Snake Breeds
There are a lot of snake breeds but we picked a few breeds that are most common and most noticeable. A snake gets a regular name based off their traits. (By regular name I mean a name that isn’t the scientific name). Some of the snake breeds we picked were the Leucistic (there are two leucistics: a blue eyed Leucistic and a black eyed Leucistic), Banana, Yellowbelly, Enchi, Spider, and Pastel.

Snakes Are Cool
Some snakes can grow to 20 feet and more but most are one and two feet long. Snakes are cool pets to have because they can have patterns that you can brag to your friends about.
