Who Wants to Join the 2018 - 2019 School Competitive Teams?

By Paige Staley

As a player on the volleyball team I have always wanted there to be articles about our school’s competitive teams and I'm sure you guys want that as well. So, now I’ll post articles about what’s going on with our school’s sports so everyone can know more about them. In my first article, I’m going to introduce to you the basics of how our teams work and give you some advice in case you’d like to try out.

DON’T FORGET THE RULES!
Our school has a variety of teams such as soccer, track, girls volleyball, and girls and boys basketball. These teams are available to any grade. The coaches for the teams are Sean Rosenberg who coaches girls volleyball and boys basketball and Shannon Cooke who coaches soccer, track, and girls basketball. The teams you have to try out for are girls volleyball, & girls and boys basketball.

When you come to tryouts or to practice, it is important to dress in appropriate athletic clothing to make sure that you are safe and comfortable. “You have to be passionate about the sport, work hard in all practices, do your homework in study time before the practices, provide sportsmanship and leadership to teammates, as well as travel and play in games,” said one of the coaches, Sean Rosenberg. So to sum up what he said, joining the team is a big commitment. You have to put your heart into it. If you can't commit then being on a competitive team is not for you.

YOU GET TO TRAVEL!
So being on a competitive team in our school requires traveling to games. Now you might be wondering “how far do we have to travel” and other related questions. The thing is, we mostly play other schools in Queens, but occasionally we may play a school in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx. Most games are after the school day. When you have a game you’ll meet your coach after school ends and then you will wait until everyone on your team is there. When they are there you will go to your game with the rest of your team either by train or by bus.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAMWORK
“Being on a team is a lot of fun! You get to play a sport you love and become really good at it as well as develop life long meaningful relationships with your teammates and coaches,” said Sean Rosenberg, and he’s right! As a former player on the girls competitive volleyball team, being on the team is fun! You will make new friends and it’s fun playing on a team in general. Sometimes you can compete and the coaches are also amazing! Also the most exciting thing about being on a competitive team is getting to play another schools and compare your skills and teamwork to theirs!

HOW THE COACHES FEEL THIS YEAR
So now I'm going to share how the coaches feel about the teams this year. “We are always excited to coach competitive teams every year because like the student athletes we are very passionate about the sport and working with students to teach them on how to develop the skills, teamwork, sportsmanship and hard work to be successful in the competitive sport as well as life, said Sean Rosenberg. ”I am already excited about how passionate our school is about soccer and track. Over 60 kids are involved in soccer and over 90 kids are involved in New York Road Runners! I am also looking forward to coaching girls basketball for it's second season,” said Shannon Cooke. They are really nice and they hope some more kids join their competitive sports teams, so you should think about it!

WILL YOU JOIN A TEAM?
In general joining the school competitive teams leads to you having a commitment to do your best. It is really fun and I hope some more people join the teams. Also if you have more questions email the coaches (see emails below) so they can tell you more about being on the competitive teams. Also if you aren't already you should enroll in to one of the sports programs. Thank You!
