School Uniforms
By Lareen Miah and Pema Yangchen
Do you believe that school uniforms are a necessity in school? My name is Pema Yangchen and my past experience with uniforms is pretty good. I didn’t have any problems with them. Instead, my writing partner Lareen states that her experience was just OK.. Most people in her school didn’t even care about uniforms and they just wore casual clothes to school.
Lareen believes that students shouldn’t wear uniforms in school because a parent or guardian might have a lower income and they might not be able to purchase uniforms for their child. In most stores, uniforms are pricey. Parents have to pay for a variety of things such as taxes, bills, rent, and much more. Uniforms don’t help financially struggling families, but instead burden them. In addition, she feels that if kids don’t wear uniforms, then they cannot express themselves and their individuality by how they dress.
On the contrary, I believe that students should wear uniforms because it is time efficient. Wearing one simple uniform every day instead of wearing a different outfit everyday is time efficient. Instead of having to spend all your time picking out an outfit to wear to school, you can wear your school uniform. Also, people have been bullied because of their casual clothes. For example, Jermaine Jones, founder and CEO of Brothers Making A Difference(B.M.A.D.) used to get bullied for wearing ragged clothes.
We created a survey to get other HPCMS students opinions and the results were interesting. According to the survey, 67% of the 98 students who responded weren’t satisfied with their previous uniforms and 88.7% believe that we shouldn’t wear uniforms in school.
Here are our results on whether students should wear school uniforms or casual clothes. This data demonstrates that many students would rather wear casual clothes than uniforms, which makes them a great fit for HPCMS!
Here are our results on student’s experiences with previous school uniforms. “Oh, I remember wearing uniforms; I hated it,” says Jose Rios, a seventh grader. This data proves that many students in HPCMS disliked their previous uniforms.
There have been many debates about school uniforms over time. But what do you think? Have any questions, comments or concerns? Write us at: pemay21@hunterspointcms.org & lareenm21@hunterspointcms.org
